Hobart & east coast Tasmania
l
A voyage of leisure exploring the unforgiving

crisp autumn day with snow on the ground provided a stunning picturesque Hobart and The Derwent
such an important waterway - Australia's second oldest city

In the centre of this cove is a small Island connected with the mainland at low water, admirably suited to the handling and reception of Stores and Provisions.
The OCEAN and LADY NELSON are lying within half a Cable-length of the Shore in Nine Fathoms of Water.
David Collins 1804

In 1804, Lt. Colonial David Collins selected Sullivan Cove as the site for the settlement on the Derwent, preferring it to Lt. Bowen's 1803 choice of Risdon Cove on the dry eastern shore.

Hunter Island to the north was linked to the cove by a causeway. On this reclaimed sandspit the first merchants built their warehouses. For the first 30 years this area was the centre of commerce and shpping. At first there was a small jetty but no wharf, and convicts, settlers and cargo had to be carried between ship and shore by boat.
